📝How to Make a Personal Super Contribution (and Claim It on Your Tax Return)
🔍 Want to grow your super and reduce your tax? Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide on how to make a personal super contribution and claim it as a tax deduction.
💰 How to Make a Personal Super Contribution (And Why It Might Be a Smart Tax Move)
Making a personal contribution to your superannuation fund is one of those rare win-wins: it helps grow your retirement savings while potentially lowering your tax bill.
Whether you’re a sole trader, employee, or just someone trying to make the most of end-of-financial-year strategies, here’s a simple, practical guide to getting it done — and claiming the deduction correctly.
✅ Step 1: Get Your Super Fund’s Contribution Details
Before transferring any money, you need the right payment info.
- Log in to your super fund account
- Locate the BPAY or direct deposit details
- Make a note of your member number (you’ll need this when making the payment)
💸 Step 2: Make the Payment
Now that you have the details, it’s time to make the contribution.
- Use your online banking to transfer the funds
- Pay via BPAY or direct deposit, as instructed by your fund
- Include your member number/reference in the payment description to ensure it’s credited correctly
🧾 Step 3: Lodge a ‘Notice of Intent to Claim’
If you want to claim the contribution as a tax deduction, this step is essential.
- Complete a Notice of Intent to Claim a Tax Deduction form
- Submit it to your super fund (most funds let you do this online)
- Wait for written confirmation before lodging your tax return
Without this confirmation, the ATO won’t accept the deduction.
📌 Bonus Tips:
- Contributions must be received by your fund by 30 June to count for this financial year
- The current concessional contribution cap as of 30/6/2025 is $27,500 (this includes employer super)
- You can check your year-to-date contributions via your MyGov ATO portal or contact your fund
